Sciatica and Lower Back Care

The sciatic nerve originates from spinal nerves in the lower back. Sciatica is pain caused by impingement of or interference with the sciatic nerve.  Impingement can be caused by disc herniations, muscle tightness or a subluxation (misaligned bones).  The pain sciatica causes is usually sharp or tingling pain, in the back of the thigh above the knee.

Chiropractic treatment is extremely effective in treating sciatica.  The techniques and types of treatment used depend on the cause and typically treatment includes chiropractic adjustments and stretches.

Lower Back Pain

Most people will experience back pain during their lifetime. Although back pain can be caused by many different things, the most common cause is a sprain or strain.

Sprains and strains often result from excessive physical demands or weakened muscles. Lifting something too heavy, a sudden fall, car crash, or sports injury can cause soft tissues (ligaments, muscles, tendons) to stretch too much. Muscles may also become weak due to poor posture and not enough exercise.

The chiropractic approach to treating sprains and strains includes specific, gentle adjustments (also called spinal manipulations), physiotherapy to help reduce inflammation, and stretching to help restore range of motion.
